JULY '08

NIGMA / ALOR STAR (MALAYSIA)

BELLYDANCE WORKSHOP ON ORIENTAL (RAQS SHARQI) & SHAABI STYLES
Dates:
4-5th July 2008
Venue: “Music Sistem Imagemart”, 2nd Floor, Nº26, Susuran Shahab Perdana, Mergong (next to Amanah Saham Bank), Alor Star; Kedah Darul Aman (Malaysia)

Fri. 4 July; 19—22:00
MODULE 1: Bellydance Technique for Oriental Routine & Shaabi

The Technique Workshop works on teaching & perfecting ‘common core’ Bellydance body technique (positions, orientation in space, footwork patterns
and travelling steps, turns, head movement, arm technique, upper and lower body technique, etc.) in common for both the Oriental Routine (Raqs Sharqi) & Shaabi styles.
This is an essential workshop to attend Module 2 & 3 Choreography Workshops.

Sat. 5 July; 9:30 —12:30
MODULE 2: Oriental Routine Choreography (based on the vocabulary prepared in Module 1)

The Oriental Routine (Raqs Sharqi) Choreography workshop includes amplifying and perfecting the oriental technique (positions, orientation in space, footwork patterns
and travelling steps, turns, head movement, arm technique, upper and lower body technique, etc.) according to the selected choreography
and the level (specially designed for Intermediate to Advanced students), combinations & movement sequences, transitions
and gradually constructed full choreography or its fragment.

Sat. 5 July; 13:30—16:30
MODULE 3: Shaabi Choreography (based on the vocabulary prepared in Module 1)

The Shaabi Choreography workshop fucuses on the “urban folklore” variety of Bellydance, closer to Balady style than to Raqs Sharqi in its energy and expression.
Not many modern singers have accomplished to create their own style and inspire so many Bellydancers to interpret their songs as the Egyptian artist Hakim has. His musical pieces are very dynamic and groovy, and encourage to create a dance full of energy, but flirty, naughty, rebellious, at the same time. In spite of using the classical Raqs Sharqi vocabulary, the air is more of the urban folklore, the Baladi and Shaabi. It is a perfect addition to a Bellydance performance if you intend to offer variety and authenticity with Egyptian touch, and something you do not see every day.

Fee: RM 140/Module, RM 400/full package or RM 370 Early Bird discount registration fee by 30th June 2008

WORKSHOP 1: Bellydance Foundations (1)
6h
Technique & Combinations
This Workshop is an introduction to Raqs Sharqi, Tribal and even Folklore. It systematizes students’ knowledge of body mechanics and Bellydance foundations preparing for further learning. It starts with the Posture Correction, Foot Positions, Alignment and basic anatomy for dancers to encourage a conscious and healthy body use. Secondly, it provides a necessary context of Arm Framing and basic Travelling Steps for learning the Body Mechanics & Lower & Upper Body Technique based on the useful concept of the ‘5 Basic Mechanisms®’. Finally, it leads to construction & analysis of basic to advanced figures & moves (Lunar, Solar & Shimmies) through the “5 Basic Mechanisms”, the origin of an unlimited variety of the Bellydance movement. Each section consists of an introduction, breakdown, analysis, drills and combinations.

Sun. 17th August; 11—14:00 & 15—18:00
WORKSHOP 2: Shaabi - BellyDancing “Groovy Songs”
6h
Technique & Choreography
In spite of using the common core BellyDance vocabulary, Shaabi, the so called ‘urban folklore’, has more of a Baladi-style air and energy and is danced to popular contemporary songs based on traditional rhythms. It is a perfect addition to a Bellydance performance if you intend to offer variety and authenticity with an Egyptian touch, and something you do not see every day. Not many modern singers have succeeded in creating their own style and inspiring so many Bellydancers to interpret their songs as the Egyptian artists: Hakim and Ehab Toufiq. Their musical pieces are very dynamic & groovy and encourage the dancer to create a flirty and naughty dance which is energetic and rebellious, at the same time.

6h
Technique &Choreography
The ‘Oriental / Raqs Sharqi’ Workshop, in its first part, helps you explore the fundamentals of Middle Eastern Dance through detailed attention to the main body core technique, the Armwork, the Footwork Patterns & Travelling Steps. It unveils the complexity of this challenging but natural and feminine dance by breaking down each movement into Basic Mechanisms®, each combination into the individual moves and the connecting transition and each sequence into ingredient combinations, and learning through drills and chaining. In its second part, it invites you to use the acquired skills in a sample choreography so you can see and feel how you may interpret the music in the Classical style Middle Eastern Dance.

Sun. 24th August; 11—14:00 & 15—18:00
WORKSHOP 4: Tribal Fusion BellyDance
6h
Technique & Choreography
Tribal Bellydance is an evolving dance form, an eclectic blend of the Classical Middle Eastern Dance and the tribal folklore of the North Africa, the Middle East, India, Flamenco, Gypsy and modern dance, both in its movement vocabulary, choice of music, and the combination of costume elements.
Although created in the San Francisco Bay, USA, Tribal has spread internationally very fast striking everyone with its otherworldly beauty and power, and the magical quality of feeling universal to every woman on earth by awaking our ancestral memory and energy printed in our body. It fills the dancers with wellness, peace and happiness by bringing together our emotions, psyche, spirit and body. The style allows both performing a solo and sharing a group dance in a free as well as synchronized improvisation through cues and swapping the roles of the leader and the followers, looking like a flock of birds in the sky mysteriously changing the direction of their flight all at the same time.
For many Bellydancers Tribal has given a long-needed alternative to the Classical or Cabaret Middle Eastern Dance by the shift in the dancers’ attitude and the expression from coquettish and seductive to majestic and strong, self-confident and tuned in with her inner voice in the trance-like, sensual and feminine dance.
